Day Thirty-Two: Delight

"Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart." - Psalm 37:4

This scripture describes "a righteous pursuit of satisfaction and pleasure, rooted in a delighted focus on God" (David Guzik). It's the belief that God is the most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.

Delighting in the Lord means that our source of happiness and joy comes from Him and in Him. It is to cheer our hearts by meditating on and receiving by faith the blessings of God. It's not merely based on circumstance or feelings. When Paul and Silas were in prison, chained and desperate, they began to praise and delight themselves in the Lord. It's a redirection of our emotions; it's a shifting of our gaze.

Delighting in the Lord protects our hearts from worry and envy. When we realize the Lord is our portion, we know we have more than anything this world could offer. What a precious treasure we've been given. The gift of Him. The order in which this scripture is written is essential to notice. We are encouraged to seek Him first before we pursue our desires.

When we pursue Him, we will find that even our desires begin to change, aligning with God's best for us. If I've learned anything about God, it's that His best for my life outdoes my best for me every time.

In this life, joy is not optional; it is essential; and can only be found in Him. Psalm 16:11 says, "You will make known to me the way of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever." The key to a joyful, satisfied and abundant life is delighting in God.

Today, take some time to delight in Him, knowing that He, too, delights in you.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I love You. I still my heart in Your presence, and I delight myself in You. Teach me the rhythm of delighting in You daily. This year I will live a life made for more by living from You and in You. Be my everything. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
